A two-seat buggy is a small, loud, dusty room that only the two of you are in. You feel the same jolt over the same rut at the same second. When the guide lifts a hand and the convoy slows for a water crossing, you are both leaning forward looking at the same line through the water.
This is where a buggy honestly differs from a quad. A quad is a single-rider machine — two quads means two people having parallel experiences, meeting again at the stops. Both are great days out, and plenty of couples deliberately choose separate quads because they want their own throttle. But if you want a shared day rather than two matching days, the buggy cab is the format that gives it to you.
Swapping who drives
Nothing about the driver's seat is permanent. Couples swap at the photo stops, at the tea break, at the river — whoever wants the wheel takes it, and the guide is fine with it.
The controls make swapping easy: a car-style steering wheel, a throttle pedal and a brake pedal, nothing to shift or balance. No driving licence and no previous experience are required — the driver simply needs to be an adult. Before the convoy moves off you get a full safety briefing and a practice lap on easy ground, which is usually where a nervous partner discovers they actually want to drive after all.
The rule we hold to is honest and simple: ability decides who drives. Anyone who does not feel confident rides as passenger for exactly the same money, no pressure and no discount games. Nobody is talked into a wheel they do not want.
One drives, one films
The passenger seat is the best camera position on the tour. From it you get the driver's face, the trail ahead over the bonnet, and the buggy in front throwing up dust — angles a rider on a single machine simply cannot shoot while holding handlebars.
A few things that make the footage worth keeping:
- A waterproof case or pouch with a wrist or neck strap. Shallow river crossings, mud spray and dust are guaranteed. A sealed case and a strap you cannot drop is the single most useful thing you can bring.
- Wear the goggles for filming too. Helmets and goggles are provided; squinting through dust ruins both your eyes and your framing.
- Film the reaction, not just the trail. Turn the camera on your partner at the water crossing. That clip beats another minute of dirt track every time.
- Shoot short. Ten-second bursts at the moments that matter, then put the camera away and hold on.
- Clothes you do not love. Mud is part of the product, and it does come inside the cab.
- Then swap seats and swap roles, so you both end the day with footage of each other rather than one person filming the entire tour.
