A buggy safari only earns the word "safari" if it leaves the tarmac. Here is how to tell the difference before you hand anyone your booking.
The two-seat cab is the whole point
A buggy is a side-by-side: two seats next to each other, a car-style steering wheel, seatbelts and a steel roll cage over both of you. That layout is exactly why couples choose buggies over quads. You talk, you brace for the same drop, you film each other, and only one of you has to concentrate on the trail. On a quad each adult rides their own machine — a child can ride as a passenger with an adult, but two adults cannot share one — so a couple ends up split across two machines, good for adrenaline, weaker for a shared memory. If a listing says "couples buggy" but the photos show machines with handlebars that you sit astride, ask which vehicle you are actually getting.
Six checks that separate a real safari from a car-park lap
- Terrain. Ask about the surface, not the scenery. Forest track, mud, dust and shallow river crossings in the Taurus foothills is a safari; laps of a fenced dirt circuit is a photo opportunity.
- Cage and belts. Steel roll cage, a seatbelt for both seats, helmets and goggles issued on site. No belts, no booking.
- Briefing and practice lap. Serious operators explain the controls and let you drive a practice lap before the convoy moves. Couples need it most — that lap is where you discover who should drive.
- Guide-led convoy. Professional off-road guides lead every group and set the pace to the group, so a cautious partner is never abandoned at the back.
- Insurance. Accident insurance should be included, not sold to you at the meeting point.
- Free door-to-door transfer. If you have to find the start point yourselves, the cheap price was never cheap.
Who drives — and can you swap?
No driving licence and no previous experience are required; the driver simply has to be an adult. We will not pretend that means everyone should drive. Ability decides: whoever handles the buggy confidently after the practice lap takes the wheel, and the other rides beside them for exactly the same money.
